Routine maintenance of self-propelled vertical scissor lifts is crucial to ensure equipment safety, reliability, and compliance with relevant standards. Here are key precautions technicians and operators should take during routine maintenance:
1. Ensure complete power disconnection
Turn off the lift and remove the key.
Disconnect the battery or power source before operating the electrical or hydraulic systems.
The lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure should be followed to prevent accidental start-up.
2. Secure the lift platform
Lower the platform completely before inspection.
If the platform must be raised for maintenance, use safety support bars or mechanical maintenance locks to prevent accidental descent.
Never rely solely on hydraulic pressure.
3. Work on level, stable ground
Park the lift on a firm, level surface.
If the ground is slightly inclined, use wheel stops.
Disable the drive function before maintenance.
4. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance guidelines
Perform maintenance strictly according to the recommended hydraulic system, battery, lubrication, and structural inspection cycles.
Use only compatible replacement parts.
5. Carefully Inspect Structural Components
Inspect the scissor arm for cracks, deformation, rust, and loose pins.
Inspect welds for fatigue or damage.
Ensure platform railings are secure and undamaged.
6. Take Precautions When Using the Hydraulic System
Release hydraulic pressure before opening hoses.
Wear protective gloves and safety goggles to prevent spray injuries.
Inspect cylinders, hoses, valves, and joints for leaks or wear.
Immediately clean any hydraulic oil leaks to prevent slipping.
7. Battery and Electrical Safety
Wear acid-resistant gloves and safety goggles when using lead-acid batteries.
Confirm all wiring, connectors, and harnesses are intact.
Avoid generating sparks near the battery, especially during charging.
Ensure the charger and battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion.
8. Use Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and protective clothing.
Wear hearing protection when using nearby power tools or compressors.
9. Avoid overstretching or climbing lift components.
Do not climb the scissor arm or drive motor during maintenance.
When the lift is descending, use a ladder or platform to reach higher positions.
10. Test all functions after maintenance.
Before restoring the lift to service, test:
Lifting function
Steering and drive function
Platform control function
Emergency stop and descent system
Tilting and overload sensors
Conduct functional tests in an open, safe area.
11. Maintain a record of all maintenance work.
Record the parts inspected and replaced.
Track battery levels, hydraulic fluid changes, tire changes, etc.
Early documentation of problems can prevent malfunctions and ensure compliance with regulations.
